Oliver Gray: A Quiet Giant

By MIKE LEE District Council 37’s Associate Director Oliver Gray, who helped guide two of the union’s Executive Directors with a quiet, yet proactive approach since 2002, died on June 29, three days after suffering a heart attack in his home in Manhattan. He was 79. Until his death, Gray was deeply involved as a guiding force for the union during the COVID-19 pandemic, including preparing Union Headquarters at 125 Barclay St. for the next phase of the long-term modernization of the building, as well as serving his other duties assisting Executive Director Henry Garrido, and supervising the DC 37 staff. Both in times of relative stability and during the tough labor struggles in helping lead the fight against layoffs during the administration of Michael Bloomberg, Gray remained calm during crisis. DC 37 Organizing sets lunch time sessions and training for fall

The DC 37 Organizing Department has scheduled fall lunch time information events this fall to strengthen the power of our collective voice and equip members with the tools necessary to move forward together. At the top of the agenda: voting “NO” on the New York State Constitutional Convention to protect worker rights and safeguard the pensions of members and retirees, and engaging the union’s membership on this and other issues. In addition, the next general activist training is scheduled for Nov. 2 at DC 37 union headquarters. Union Week and Lunch Time Meetings set for April 2017

The DC 37 Organizing Department has scheduled lunchtime meetings and a special Union Week to strengthen the power of our collective voice and equip members with the tools necessary to move forward together. Union Week will be held on April 3-7, 2017, at 250 Broadway for DC 37 members who work at the New York City Housing Authority. There will also be a Lunch Time Meetings on April 17 at NYCHA’s 90 Church Street location and on April 15 at NYCERS at 300 Jay Street. Activists Collect Signatures to Support Safety Net Hospital Bill During Harlem Week

WILLIAMS DC 37 had a great day in Harlem at the annual Harlem Week festivities in August as union activists kicked off the signature campaign urging Governor Andrew Cuomo to enact the new Enhanced Safety Net Hospital bill. The union petitions add community support for new legislation that would protect the safety net of public hospitals in New York State threatened by unprecedented funding shortfalls. Safety net bills (A. 9476-A)/(S.6948-A), which the state Senate and Assembly passed in June, creates a true safety net definition based on the number of Medicaid and uninsured patients served. With the definition, additional funding can be negotiated in the next state budget cycle to safety net providers, including the public hospitals, and would increase the opportunity for federal matching funds.
