Union Hosts Earth Day Expo

April 16, 2019 // 0 Comments

By MIKE LEE A cleaner, safer New York City was on the agenda at the District Council 37 Earth Day Expo, held April 13 at union headquarters. The event, co-sponsored by Queens City Council member Costa Constantinides, chair of the Council’s Environmental Protection Committee, was part of a big push for the Climate Mobilization Act, a sweeping legislative package that is up for a vote later this week. The initiative includes Intro 1253, the most ambitious carbon reduction bill ever passed by a city, which is expected to create thousands of new jobs over the next few years. DC 37 Executive Director Henry Garrido welcomed the gathering and spoke of the “moral responsibility” to address climate change. He compared the environmental movement to other social justice struggles of the past and present. “This is the moral imperative of our generation,” said Garrido, in support of the [More...]

Union Rallies for Climate Justice

April 9, 2019 // 2 Comments

By MIKE LEE The union came out in force at City Hall Park to demand action on climate change and to support proposed legislation before the City Council. The legislation, Intro 1253, calls for direct proactive measures to address this vital issue and urges the creation of thousands of green jobs throughout the city. At the rally, DC 37 Executive Director Henry Garrido addressed the city pension issue. As a trustee overseeing the pension, Garrido has led efforts to divest from fossil fuel investments and shift money to green energy. Garrido told the crowd that city pension fund trustees are working to double the fund’s investments in climate change solutions to $4 billion. He said, “We are fighting for this because it is right thing to do. We cannot expect anybody else to do this for us. New York City should be the leader in taking a stand for climate justice.” The action was part [More...]

A New Hope

February 15, 2019 // 0 Comments

By HENRY GARRIDO At the beginning of last year, many pundits and labor advocates were pessimistic about the future of the labor movement. First, the U.S. Supreme Court was expected to rule in favor of the plaintiff in the anti-union Janus v. AFSCME case. Many believed an adverse ruling would hurt public employee unions financially and lead to a loss of membership. Second, we were worried about the country’s political climate. In Washington, D.C., the Trump administration — with its huge tax giveaway to the rich, lifting of regulations, and efforts to dismantle Obamacare — was clearly pursuing an agenda aimed at hurting working families. Meanwhile, a well-funded, extreme, right-wing net-work continued to carry out a nationwide campaign to kill off unions. But guess what? The doom-and-gloom scenario never happened. Chicken Little disappeared from the landscape. At DC 37, our [More...]

The Midterm Elections and Us

November 20, 2018 // 0 Comments

By HENRY GARRIDO The midterm elections have shown that unions are a vital electoral force in our country and the United States is undergoing a political realignment that we hope will significantly improve the lives of working people. The recapturing of the U.S. House of Representatives by Democrats creates an important check on the excesses of the Trump administration. This allows us to push back against GOP lawmakers’ plan to gut Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security; adopt trade agreements harmful to workers; dismantle Obamacare; repeal regulations, including worker protections, and pass more tax cuts to benefit corporations and the 1 percent. As we look ahead to President Trump’s campaign for a second term in 2020, we can expect a rocky road ahead. Many feel we face political warfare rather than compromise and constructive dialog over public policy. While it appears the [More...]

Yes We Can. Yes We Did. DC 37 Executive Director Henry Garrido on the Democratic Primary Victories of Gov. Cuomo And Public Advocate Letitia James

September 17, 2018 // 0 Comments

“Thursday’s primary election victories by Governor Andrew Cuomo and Public Advocate Letitia James were good news for the state’s working men and women. The Governor and the Public Advocate are true friends of DC 37 and the city’s labor movement. They are steadfast fighters against the extreme agenda of Donald Trump. They have fought for pay equity, protected immigrant rights and are firm supporters of working families. I am proud of our volunteers’ efforts to get out the vote that contributed to the high voter turn-out in New York City. As we enter the fall campaign, DC 37’s Green Machine will continue to work to help re-elect Governor Cuomo and to elect Tish James as the first African-American woman to serve as New York State Attorney General this [More...]

Help the Union Get Out the Vote

September 6, 2018 // 0 Comments

When hardworking public employees and union members ask how the politics of this country got to where they are now, much of the answer can be found in the midterm elections of 2010. That’s when the progressive agenda of President Barack Obama was critically wounded by insufficient turnout and the extreme right-wing took over Congress and statehouses across the country. This time around, we have the opportunity to thwart Trump’s agenda of nurturing the ultra-wealthy and decimating public services, Medicare and Social Security. It begins with the Democratic Primary on Thursday, September 13. Please note the date. Customarily, we go to the polls on the second Tuesday of September, but out of respect for the memory of those who perished on 9/11, it has been changed. The union urges you to support the Gov. Andrew Cuomo and New York City Public Advocate Letitia James for New York State [More...]

July 6, 2018 // 0 Comments

Surrounded by union activists from DC 37, Transit Workers Local 100, Communications Workers of America Local 1180 and several other unions, James promised to fight against corporate greed and to protect workers if she’s elected to the office this November. “In the wake of recent destructive decisions from the U.S. Supreme Court, New York must fight harder than ever to protect the rights of our workers,” said James, during a press conference on July 6 at the Municipal Building. “I will use every tool at my disposal to ensure that justice applies equally to every hardworking New Yorker.” James announced that she will create an arbitration review team to address [More...]

Four DC 37-Backed Candidates Win in Special Elections

April 26, 2018 // 0 Comments

By ALFREDO ALVARADO Four Democratic Party candidates endorsed by DC 37 won their special elections that took place on April 24. In the Bronx’s 32nd State Senate District election, Assembly member Luis Sepulveda beat Republican Patrick Delices. In the race to represent Westchester County’s 37th Senate District, Assembly member Shelley Mayer defeated Republican Julian Killian. In Queens, Aridia Espinal will now represent the 39th District in the state Assembly. Her seat was vacated by Francisco Moya, who now serves on the City Council. Espinal will serve in Albany until December. Harvey Epstein won a seat in the state Assembly and will represent Manhattan’s 74th District. That seat was also vacant. With the victories of Mayer and Sepulveda, Democrats now have 32 seats in the Senate, but the balance of power in Albany will likely not change. Brooklyn Democrat Sen. Simcha Felder plans [More...]
