The DC 37 Organizing Department has scheduled lunch time information events this fall to strengthen the power of our collective voice and equip members with the tools necessary to move forward together. At the top of the agenda: voting “NO” on the New York State Constitutional Convention to protect worker rights and safeguard the pensions of members and retirees, and engaging the union’s membership on this and other issues. In addition, the next general activist training is scheduled for Nov. 2 at DC 37 union headquarters. Queens Library Local 1321 Organizes New Workers

By GREGORY N. HEIRES Through an organizing drive, Queens Library Guild Local 1321 has expanded its membership by more than 10 percent. The local initiated the campaign in 2015 after a number of non-union staffers approached the local about joining. “They thought they were being treated unfairly, and we were more than happy to fight for them to join the union,” Local 1321 President John Hyslop said. “Though certain library employees are excluded from joining the local, we always found it strange that the library was employing so many,” Hyslop said. “We looked into this and decided there were a lot of workers who should be members.” Associate General Counsel Steven Sykes and Assistant General Counsel Meaghean Murphy advised the Local 1321 organizing team how to go about recruiting the new members. The DC 37 Organizing Department has scheduled lunchtime meetings and a special Union Week to strengthen the power of our collective voice and equip members with the tools necessary to move forward together. Union Week will be held on April 3-7, 2017, at 250 Broadway for DC 37 members who work at the New York City Housing Authority. There will also be a Lunch Time Meetings on April 17 at NYCHA’s 90 Church Street location and on April 15 at NYCERS at 300 Jay Street. Lunchtime & Town Hall Meetings and Activist Training set for March, April 2017

The DC 37 Organizing Department is heading into spring with lunchtime and town hall meetings and activist training sessions to strengthen the power of our collective voice and equip members with the tools necessary to move forward together. Town Hall Meetings are scheduled at Queens Hospital Center on March 21 (for day shift workers) and March 28 (for evening shift workers). Lunchtime meetings will be held at FISA/OPA on March 30 and April 27, and at DOHMH in Long Island City on April 7. General activist training sessions, scheduled every other month, start in April at DC 37 union headquarters. Activists Flock to Organizing Summit

  By ALFREDO ALVARADO The increase in “right to work” legislation being passed around the country, the threats to immigrants and the upcoming constitutional convention vote in November were some of the urgent issues DC 37 Executive Director Henry Garrido addressed during his welcoming remarks at the union’s first organizing summit. “They say New York is not Wisconsin and it can’t happen here, but I’m not so sure,” said Garrido, referring to the union-busting legislation introduced in Wisconsin by Gov. The meeting is part of the “Leading the Way” initiative, a long-term plan to transform DC 37 from a service-oriented union into an organizing union. “We are making a lot of progress in our effort to draw new blood into the union,” said Barbara Terrelonge, director of the DC 37 Organizing Dept. “This will be a great opportunity for members who are not very familiar with the union to learn about the labor movement’s agenda. Workers Vote 100% to Join DC 37

By MOLLY CHARBONEAU Youth Care Workers at the Children’s Village on Staten Island voted overwhelmingly in May—despite management intimidation—to be represented by District Council 37.
