November 21, 2018 // 0 Comments

District Council 37 will hold lunch-time meetings about the proposed 52-month contract for 10,000 CUNY workers around the city. “We want to make sure our members at the City University of New York are well-versed on the terms of the contract so they can make an informed vote on it,” DC 37 Executive Director Henry Garrido said. The union expects to send out an informational packet on the contract that includes a mail-ballot, a summary of the deal and a letter from Garrido, who urges members to vote, “Yes,” by the end of the month. The independent American Arbitration Association will release the vote count on Dec. 18. Here are the scheduled meetings: Queeensborough Community College 222-05 56th Avenue, A-412, Bayside, Queens, New York Medical Arts Building Room 136 (Lecture Room) Tuesday, Dec. 4, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Baruch College 55 Lexington Ave., New York, New [More...]

State Court Workers Win With New Contract

July 14, 2017 // 0 Comments

By GREGORY N. HEIRES State court workers represented by Local 1070 overwhelmingly approved a new contract that provides for 2 percent annual pay increases over three years. Members voted 687-54 in favor of the contract in a mail ballot vote tabulated on May 31. “We worked very hard on this contract, and we’re glad members recognized that in approving our new economic agreement,” said Fausto Sabatino, president of Local 1070 Court, County and Dept. of Probation Employees. “We didn’t have any givebacks. At a time when unions are under attack across the country, we were able to improve our contract, protect our benefits and get fair salary increases.” The contract boosts location pay — the extra compensation members receive for the high living expenses of New York City — and the longevity bonus for years of service. The contract, which runs from April 1, 2016, to March 31, [More...]

BY GREGORY N. HEIRES DC 37 mourns the loss of Evelyn Seinfeld, for years the union’s chief negotiator, who died on June 20 after a long battle with cancer. She was 68 years old. Evelyn, who worked at DC 37 from 1975 until her retirement earlier this year, was admired by her colleagues for her passion for mentoring and her encyclopedic knowledge of the civil service system, its rules and regulations, and DC 37’s many contracts. Together with then-DC 37 Executive Director Lillian Roberts, she led the negotiations with the city for the union’s current 2010-17 economic agreement, which preserves the premium-free medical coverage of more than 100,000 members and provides for a total wage increase of 10.41 percent. “Evelyn was a keen technician and an expert in labor relations,” DC 37 Executive Director Henry Garrido said. “She worked in a very specialized business that many of [More...]
