Union, Advocates Fight Against Cuts to Library Budgets

Facing possible cuts in the city budget, DC 37 leaders of locals representing public library employees took to the steps of City Hall May 21 with the heads of the city’s three library systems, elected officials and advocates to warn of a dramatic impact should funding to the library systems be reduced– including loss of weekend service, reduced programming and delayed revitalization projects. “Our public libraries are lifelines for NYC neighborhoods – and cutting their budgets would jeopardize hours and days of service. Union to CUNY: Do the Right Thing, Pay Workers Now!

By MIKE LEE Workers at City University of New York are outraged that, despite having reached a quick economic agreement with the city in November 2018 and voting overwhelmingly to ratify that contract the following month, they have yet to receive their pay increase and retroactive pay. Citing unforeseen technical problems in their accounting systems, the university system has failed to issue checks that reflect the new terms of the contract. The union is pushing the university hard to resolve this issue, and union activists joined local presidents to speak out before CUNY’s Board of Trustees at LaGuardia Community College on April 30. “Our members our loyal employees who work hard. CUNY Members Overwhelmingly Approve New Contract

By GREGORY N. HEIRES Members at the City University of New York voted by more than 98 percent in favor of a 52-month new contract that provides a raise of more than 8 percent with no givebacks. The contract–which covers 10,000 members–includes a new paid family leave benefit, which will go into effect in 2019. “It’s a good contract,” said information technology assistant Anthony Chambers, a Local 2627 shop steward. “It’s in line with what the other city workers got, it’s equitable.” “We are proud to have negotiated a no-giveback contract, with a decent wage increase, that protects our benefits and provides a great new benefit,” said DC 37 executive director Henry Garrido. CUNY workers! Time is running out to vote on your proposed contract. Please vote YES to ratify this agreement and mail in your ballot today. DC 37 and the City University of New York agreed on Nov. 1 to a tentative 52-month contract that provides an 8.24 percent raise with no givebacks. The pact covers 10,000 CUNY employees represented by DC 37 in locals 375, 384, 983, 1407, 1597, 2054 and 2627. A few weeks ago, an informational packet and a ballot was mailed to DC 37 workers who work in the city’s public university system. Anyone who did not receive the mailing should call the independent American Arbitration Association at 800-529-5218 in order to be able to vote on the contract. Please mail in your ballot today! Union Holds Information Sessions about the Tentative CUNY Contract

District Council 37 will hold lunch-time meetings about the proposed 52-month contract for 10,000 CUNY workers around the city. “We want to make sure our members at the City University of New York are well-versed on the terms of the contract so they can make an informed vote on it,” DC 37 Executive Director Henry Garrido said. The union expects to send out an informational packet on the contract that includes a mail-ballot, a summary of the deal and a letter from Garrido, who urges members to vote, “Yes,” by the end of the month. The independent American Arbitration Association will release the vote count on Dec. 18. DC 37 and City University of New York Announce Tentative Labor Pact

Nov 2, 2018 – District Council 37, the city’s largest union of municipal employees, and the City University of New York have agreed to a tentative 52-month contract that provides 8.24 percent in raises for the union’s 10,000 members who work in the public university system. The agreement, which is subject to approval by the CUNY Board of Trustees and ratification by the CUNY members of DC 37, preserves the premium-free health-care coverage of members, and will include back pay. It also protects the health benefits of CUNY retirees. The agreement also calls for CUNY to increase its annual contribution for education and professional development, and provides extra funds to boost benefits and address pay inequities. Union Mourns Passing of Retirees Association’s Former President

By ALFREDO ALVARADO Rochelle Mangual, who began her career as a civil servant working at the City University of New York, passed away on Aug. 13. Mangual worked at Hunter College in the Bursar’s Office and was a member of City University of New York and Educational Opportunity Centers Local 384. Shortly after joining the city workforce, she became active in the union and served as a shop steward and executive board member. In 1999, Mangual retired, and in the following year she became active in the DC 37 Retirees Association. She served as the associate recording secretary and in May 2013 Mangual became president of the 27,000 member association. Mangual played a role in several committees that advocated on behalf of senior citizens. She was a member of the Senior Citizens Advisory Committee for the Metropolitan Transit Authority and was also the community director for the local [More...]

DC 37’s CUNY Workers Back New Contract

By MIKE LEE Closing a chapter in a long, difficult fight for a fair contract, the 12,000 workers represented by DC 37 at the City University of New York (CUNY),  overwhelmingly approved the agreement. The union announced the results on Monday. The members backed the agreement by 98 percent in a mail ballot vote conducted by the American Arbitration Association. Ballots were sent to members on July 1, after the union negotiated a tentative agreement with CUNY on June 10. The contract increases the pay by more than 10 percent for the hardworking CUNY DC 37 members over an 87 month period, covering the time from November 1, 2009 through January 31, 2017. The contract provides 10.41% in compounded wage increases and a $1,000 bonus upon ratification. DC 37 Delivers Thousands of Signatures to Gov. Cuomo Calling for Full CUNY Funding

As state budget negotiations continue in Albany, District Council 37 leaders and activists today delivered to Gov. Cuomo’s New York City office the names of more than 5,000 City University supporters who have signed a petition urging state lawmakers to fully fund CUNY. The Governor’s January budget proposal called for shifting $485 million from the state to the city in funding obligations. “These signatures demonstrate the strong sentiment among New Yorkers to fully fund CUNY,” said DC 37 Executive Director Henry Garrido. “For thousands of New Yorkers, CUNY’s quality, affordable higher education provides a path to upward mobility.
