DC 37 Endorsements for the Sept. 12 City Primary

On July 18, District Council 37 announced its endorsements of candidates for NYC elected offices in the Primary Elections on Tuesday, September 12. Among the endorsed candidates are NYC Public Advocate Letitia James, NYC Comptroller Scott Stringer, Borough Presidents Eric Adams of Brooklyn, Gayle Brewer of Manhattan, Ruben Diaz, Jr. of the Bronx, Melinda Katz of Queens and James Oddo of Staten Island. The union also endorsed 46 candidates for City Council seats, including the following incumbents in these competitive districts of particular interest to the union: Antonio Reynoso in District 34 (Bklyn-Queens), Laurie A. Cumbo in District 35 (Bklyn), and Carlos Menchaca in District 38 (Bklyn). DC 37 Celebrates Latino Heritage at Union Headquarters

By ALFREDO ALVARADO District Council 37’s Latino Heritage Committee celebrated National Hispanic Heritage Month with its 24th annual event. The festivities took place at union headquarters and began on Sept. 20 with the traditional ribbon cutting ceremony. “Latinos contributing to culture in America is our theme this year,” said Carmen Flores, the committee chair, at the opening, where she was joined by Executive Director Henry Garrido. The November presidential election was the hot topic, and Garrido urged everyone to help get out the vote on Election Day and support Hillary Clinton. “The Latino community has to send a message that is loud and clear,” Garrido said. “Not getting to the polls would be a tragic mistake,” He also urged members to join DC 37 volunteers who will be heading to Philadelphia, on Oct. 22 and Nov. 5 to help get the vote out in Pennsylvania. DC 37 Announces Key Endorsements in the City’s Primary Election for State Legislative Seats

By MIKE LEE DC 37 has endorsed candidates for six state legislative races in New York’s Tuesday, Sept. 13 primary. The union backs Sen. Roxanne Persuad, Democrat from Brooklyn’s 19th District. Born in Guyana, Persuad was a higher education administrator. Prior to serving in the state Senate, Sen. Persuad was president of the 69 th Precinct Community Council in Canarsie, a member of Community Board 18 and commissioner on the New York City Districting Commission. DC 37 also supports State Sen. Toby Ann Stavisky of the 16th District in Queens. A fighter for social justice, Stavisky is the assistant Democratic leader and ranking minority member on the Senate’s Committee on Higher Education, working to improve public schools and programs for older adults. DC 37 Endorses Hillary Clinton for President

BY MIKE LEE With the New York Democratic Party presidential primary in three weeks on Tuesday, April 19, DC 37 has endorsed former New York Sen. Hillary Clinton for president. Last night, the DC 37 delegates voted overwhelmingly to endorse her candidacy at their monthly meeting, after impassioned speeches in her support by local presidents Dennis Ifill of Local 1359, who is also chair of the DC 37 Political Action Committee, and James Tucciarelli of Local 1320, as well as Local 1549 Executive Vice President Alma Roper. “We are proud to endorse Secretary Clinton as the next president of our great nation,” said DC 37 Executive Director Henry Garrido. “We supported her first run for office back in 2000, when she was elected to the U.S. Senate.
