DC 37 and CUNY EXPAND LABOR LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

By STEPHEN JOHNSON, DC 37 Education Fund Administrator DC 37 and the CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies (SLU) will fully fund a series of four Labor Leadership programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels for DC 37 members. These free college courses will provide a comprehensive overview of union-side labor relations in the public sector. Students will gain the practical skills and knowledge necessary for effective leadership in collective bargaining, union administration, research, organizing, and labor law. SLU and DC 37 will cover full tuition costs for up to 100 members a year, an estimated $300,000 annually. This new Labor Leadership program is a stepping-stone for completing a bachelor’s and/or a graduate degree. Union’s Private Sector Locals’ Virtual Fair a Success

By MIKE LEE Members of the union’s Non-Profit and Private Sector Division attended the Health, Housing and Resource Fair to learn more about the services DC 37 provides for members.  The Division, formerly District Council 1707, unified with DC 37 in Sept. 2019, bringing in Locals 95, 107, 205, 215, 253, and 389, representing 20,000 home health care, day care, non-profit workers and other titles. Despite being unable to have an in-person event due to the pandemic, key union leaders and staffers, put together a multifaceted set of speakers, presentations, and a variety of workshops to educate members on opportunities for education, health benefits, housing, and legal planning. CUNY Labor School Advances Worker Careers and Solidarity

HEIRES  Where else but in New York City could you expect a college graduation ceremony to open with the singing of the historic labor song “Solidarity Forever,” along with the country’s national anthem? That occurred at the CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies, which recently celebrated the graduation of the new public university’s first graduating class. Nearly 30 DC 37 members were among the proud graduates. “Our mission is directed toward the public good and social justice,” Gregory Mantsios, the founding dean, said at the opening of the ceremony.
