HEIRES DC 37’s citywide CUNY campaign is providing the union’s 10,000 members working in the city’s public university system the chance to learn about their proposed contract and to ask questions about bread-and-butter issues affecting them. A 45-member union team is carrying out the information blitz to ensure members are able to make an informed vote on the tentative economic agreement. Union, City Set Pension Investment Goals

WILLIAMS At a press conference on Sept. 13, Mayor Bill de Blasio and City Comptroller Scott Stringer announced the New York City pension fund goal to invest $4 billion in clean energy and other climate change solutions by 2021. “New York City leads from the front when it comes to the fight against climate change,” said de Blasio. “We’re taking a stand for generations to come with our goal to double our pension investments in job-creating climate solutions. New Agreement on Career Advancement

By GREGORY N. HEIRES The union reached an agreement with the city to improve training and the career advancement prospects of DC 37 members, particularly women and minorities. The agreement, was finalized on Aug. 2, after a joint labor-management committee spent two years studying how to expand promotional opportunities for union members. The agreement is the result of the work of the Joint Recruitment and Promotion Study Committee, which was established under DC 37’s 2010-17 contract. The agreement includes seed money of $150,000 for the DC 37 Education Dept. to dedicate to training. Patricia Peterson, retired Senior Police Administrative Aide, Local 1549 By DIANE S. WILLIAMS After 38 years with, the New York Police Department, I retired in February 2017. I was a Senior Police Administrative Aide in the 33rd precinct in Washington Heights since 1994 where I was responsible for crime analysis, reviewing complaints and classifying them as homicides, shootings, break-ins, noting any trends detectives and commanding officers should know about. A friend invited me to my first union meeting in 1988. I had questions I wanted answered, so I went. I became a Local 1549 shop steward and, later, a delegate. I shared information with my coworkers because not everyone can attend every union meeting. This year I was invited to become a Volunteer Member Organizer. Union Helps 40 Urban Park Rangers Prepare for Promotional Exam

By DIANE S. WILLIAMS Forty Urban Park Rangers enrolled in a course offered through the union’s Education Fund to prepare for a promotional exam to become Associate Urban Park Rangers. The six-session course began in late November; the test is Dec. 12. “If UPRs pass with a score of 70 or higher, they can be promoted to Associate Urban Park Ranger and earn as much as $64,000 to start,” said Local 983 President Joe Puleo. AUPRs and UPRs are Peace Officers who educate park patrons and keep city parklands and beaches safe. The starting salaries for AUPRs pay almost $17,000 more than the $47,125 base salary UPRs earn annually, Puleo said. The rate of pay typically increase when the union finalizes its negotiations with the city for a new contract. Local 983 Welcomes New Parks Enforcement Patrol Officers

By DIANE WILLIAMS DC 37 Local 983 welcomed several classes of new recruits to the Parks and Recreation Academy on Randall’s Island in March. Twenty new Urban Park Rangers, all recent college graduates, previously worked security at airports and malls before entering training for civil service careers as PEP Officers. The Parks Dept. academy schools UPRs for 11 weeks after which the agency assigns them to regular patrols in public parks. “This job entails teaching the public about nature and respect for the environment and protecting people so they can enjoy our city’s miles of trails, beaches and parklands in safety,” said Local 983 President Joe Puleo, who started as a UPR over 20 years ago. DC37 and The City College of New York Establish a Program for Union Members

By MIKE LEE The DC 37 Education Fund has signed an agreement with The City College of New York for the school to offer basic computer courses to DC 37 members. This follows a similar agreement with Medgar Evers College, announced in August, to develop programs and courses to help members prepare for job promotions and certification tests. This latest partnership between the Ed Fund and City University of New York institutions will provide opportunities for members to learn and enhance computer skills, as well as provide training to bolster work skills they need as city workers. The initial program includes classes in introductory computing and such vital program applications as Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word and for Microsoft PowerPoint.
