Union Secretary, New Executive Board Members Elected

By GREGORY N. HEIRES On Nov. 26 DC 37 delegates elected John Hyslop, the president of Queens Library Guild Local 1321, as the new secretary of the union. At their monthly meeting, the delegates also voted to fill two vacancies on the DC 37 Executive Board. The delegates chose Franklyn “Bubba” Page, the longtime president of Lifeguards Local 461, and Rawle Campbell, president of Metropolitan Museum of Art Local 1503, to serve in those posts, which are reserved for representatives from local unions whose members constitute less than 5 percent of the of the union’s total membership. Hyslop replaces Deborah Pitts, president of Finance Administrative Employees and City Investigators Local 1113, who stepped down earlier this year. Jim Tucciarelli, Union Leader and Activist, Retires

Jim Tucciarelli, a DC 37 leader for more than three decades and a staunch advocate for fellow responders who worked at Ground Zero in the aftermath of 9/11, has retired. Tucciarelli, longtime president of Sewage Treatment and Senior Sewage Treatment Workers Local 1320, was a member of the DC 37 Executive Board and sat on the Judicial Panel of DC 37’s national union, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). He fought tirelessly to protect jobs, and improve the lives of, sewage treatment workers whose dedicated service keeps New York’s communities safe, clean, and healthy. Local 1320’s members operate the Department of Environmental Protection’s 14 wastewater treatment plants and collection facilities. Union Celebrates Jewish Heritage

By MIKE LEE Summer came early, so it was of no surprise that the party was hot during the Jewish Heritage celebration at DC 37 headquarters. The event celebrated the anniversary of the founding of Israel — known in Hebrew as Yom Ha’atzmaut — proclaimed in Tel Aviv on May 14, 1948. After an invocation by Rabbi Michael S. Miller, executive vice president of the Jewish Community Council of New York, Dr. Leonard Davidman, president of Psychologists Local 1189 and chair of the DC 37 Jewish Heritage Committee introduced DC 37 Executive Director Henry Garrido. In his remarks, Garrido stressed the importance of thoughts coinciding with action. Meet Your New DC 37 Executive Board Members

At their November 28, 2017 meeting, the DC 37 Delegates elected three local presidents to the union’s Executive Board. Judith Arroyo, Local 436 By DIANE S. WILLIAMS Judith Arroyo, the president of the United Federation of Public Nurses and Epidemiologists Local 436 since 2007, was recently elected vice president of the union’s Executive Board in November. Local 436 has more than 1,000 active members who are Public Health Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Pediatric Nurse Associates and Public Health Epidemiologists in the Dept. of Health and Mental Hygiene and NYC Health and Hospitals.  They protect the health of New York City and are part of the city’s emergency medical response teams at 9/11 shelters, and for anthrax, small pox, Ebola and Zika virus threats. “Women represent almost half the membership and we need more women to step into leadership roles,” said Arroyo, who is [More...]

Delegates Elect Deborah A. Pitts as DC 37’s Secretary

Pitts, president of Finance Administrative Employees and City Investigators Local 1113, was elected on Sept. 26 to serve as secretary of the District Council 37 Executive Board. Union delegates elected Pitts at their monthly meeting. Pitts defeated Local 375 member, former 1st Vice President, and DC 37 delegate Michelle Keller-Ng. The election was held to fill the secretary’s seat on the union’s executive board, made vacant by the retirement earlier this year of Local 957 President Walthene Primus. “It is an honor to serve DC 37 and our members–that’s the most important thing for me, helping our members,” said Pitts. Pitts also serves as the chair of the DC 37 Black History Committee, which every February coordinates a month of activities for members.
