Bronx Zoo Holiday Lights Display

By DIANE S. WILLIAMS

An illuminated, global safari brightens the Bronx Zoo each night from Nov. 20 through Jan. 10, thanks to hardworking Local 1501 members.

The new display crosses three continents and dives deep into the ocean to feature illuminated animals from all over the world.

“Our members, the electricians, zookeepers, ticket agents, and more are essential workers who make the zoo’s holiday display operate smoothly and safely,” said Raul Domenech, president of Local 1501.

The Bronx Zoo is one of New York City’s cultural jewels where DC 37 members work to care for and protect some 4,000 different species of animals, birds, reptiles, and fish in their natural habitats.

Members installed thousands of lights as part of the huge display of five lantern safaris spread across several acres in the Wildlife Conservation Society park. Each exhibit showcases a different wildlife region.

As an added safety concern during COVID-19, Local 1501 members installed hand sanitizing stations throughout the grounds.

Stilt walkers and ice carvers add to the festive feeling. The nightly outdoor winter exhibit is a fun and safe tour that families and children of all ages can enjoy throughout the holiday season.

The Bronx Zoo Holiday Lights has a limited number of tickets available each day. It begins at 3 p.m. and is not part of the WCS Zoo’s Free Wednesdays program.

Visitors can purchase tickets online for contactless entry. Guests and staff are required to wear face masks. Visit Bronx Zoo Know Before You Go at https://bit.ly/3msTKQw
